November 2006 - 10 years of Wydawnictwo Czarne
The meeting is part of the "Literary Meetings GARDZIENICE - Black" realized since 2000 in cooperation with the Publishing House Black (Wydawnictwo Czarne) – Monika Sznajderman and Andrzej Stasiuk. They present in Gardzienice the authors from Central and Eastern Europe, whose books are published in Wydawnictwo Czarne. So far, as part of the project, Gardzienice was visited by Jurij Andruchowycz and Taras Prochaśko /Ukraine /, Marius Ivaškevičius and Renata Serelyte /Lithuania /, Simona Popescu /Romania /, Rigels Halili / Albania / Bora Ćosić /Serbia/, Dubravka Ugrešić /Croatia/, Herta Müller /Germany/, Nenad Veličković /Bosnia/ Martin Pollack and Karl-Markus Gauss /Austria/.

The Publishing House Black (Wydawnictwo Czarne) is 10 years old. It's a good time to get to know someone's character , to make friends. Some became friends with Wydawnictwo Czarne, and when finding in bookstores novels with the distinctive covers (designed by Kamil Targosz) they were buying them without looking inside. We hope that through these 10 years you weren’t bored with us, when you got to know the literature of the countries of the part of Europe, which some people call The Second Hand Europe, when you discovered with us the literary debuts, read essays and reports, or literature written by young female European authors. We hope that we will celebrate the next decade together with you, our readers. Soon we will publish new series - for example, "Series with fear", with detective and crime stories, or a series of "Conversations", where you can "talk" with another person, even with the little inaccessible one. Czarne is not only a publishing house, but an idea, a cultural initiative, institution discovering literature and culture of Eastern and Central European countries. It is thanks to Wydawnictwo Czarne tha you had the opportunity to get acquainted with authors from Romania, Bosnia, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine , Albania, Serbia. In the days of the dominance of western literature books published by Czarne bring closer the literature from marginalized countries, the countries non-existent in the popular consciousness, forgotten. Yet these countries offer a brilliant literature, with cognitive qualities. It's not just essays on Central Europe, but books to read, novels - happy and sad, surreal and realistic, traditional and experimental.

THE EXHIBITION CONSISTS OF:

The relics of the writers
We want the visitors of the exhibition to feel the "Black ghost", and be able to see up close the relics of the writers - usually funny, associated with the whole arsenal of anecdotes. It is said that an object removed from its usual context becomes a surreal one. This is probably the case with shoes of Maciej Malicki, which constitute an important exhibit here. The writer wore them when he walked along the coal track from Jaktorów to Zawiercie, and then walked into a fountain. Each of these items is linked to some literary history. An expert in the matter will joyfully stare at the legendary typewriter, with the help of which in the mountain wilderness Andrzej Stasiuk constructed his novels. Well, and who would not want to touch the tequila from the title of Krzysztof Varga’s book? Among the exhibits one can also find the historic telephone, through which the Publishing House Black contacted its first authors. Visitors will have the opportunity to see priceless manuscripts and original floppy discs with literary content.

A series of photographs
Nobody believes anymore that writers are rather unattractive people, who use the literature to compensate for a poor social life. A series of photographs presents the writers associated with the Publishing House Black and shows that their faces are as interesting as novels, essays and reports. Readers probably find there their favorite characters. The images present, among other things, photos of Andrzej Stasiuk, Krzysztof Varga, Paul Smolensky, Darek Suski, Dubravka Ugrešić, Maciej Malicki, or Herta Muller. In some photos, the authors perform a variety of actions that show they live in the real world.

Artworks by Kamila Targosz
Characteristic works by Kamil Targosz are for some the symbol of Wydawnictwo Czarne. Simple black moon, became the permanent logo of the Publishing House. Recognizable in Poland book covers of the Publishing House Black are a bit surreal, disturbing images. This iconography combines Chagall’s volatility, simplicity of African art and a multitude of details, like in Bruegel’s art. Some readers of Wydawnictwo Czarne books will remember sensational dark images by Targosz in "Dukla" by Andrzej Stasiuk or winter, empty, dreamlike landscapes in "The Winter" by the same author . The exhibition will be a unique opportunity to view these works in their original form, see what technique and format was used in their creation.
Opening of the meeting will feature Maciej Malicki , who will be promoting his latest book called Takie tam.
During the openings some black snacks will be provided. You can try black birthday cake, black coffee and black pudding .
