MATING based on Karamazov Brothers
by Fyodor Dostoyewsky
Depths of characters created by Dostoyevsky and whirls of their conversations have always been a sort of nourishment for artists of theatre.
While all the encounters in Karamazov Brothers take place during few months (and few hundred pages), in MATING they are condensed and packed into one evening, one night, one wedding ceremony, when despair mates with despair, degeneration mates with degeneration and together they dance in procession leading straight to the madness.
Silent witness of folly parades and human collisions is Alosha, pure, almost saint-like boy. He is a destination point for all the souls longing to confess their sins during this night of purification, as they did before with his teacher Zosimos. With their stories and behaviour, all the characters create for Alosha a space of twisted Russian Bildungsroman.Bachtinian polyphony flows into carnival feast of fools. Who was on the bottom will be lifted - who was on the top will be thrown down.
